Avocados Are Delicious

by Nathan Chavez, Grade 3, Oakland, CA
This poem shares a deep love for the one, the only, the GOAT of stone fruit. . . avocados!
About the Author

Nathan loves to eat all things, especially burgers, spaghetti, and clam chowder. He loves to draw Pokémon and read Wings of Fire. He’s currently into creating characters for Dungeons & Dragons with his friends.

Avocados Are Delicious

Avocados are the best.
They are in salads, on toast, and even eaten plain!
Nothing beats avocados, so soft and mushy.
Avocados make me feel happy because they are delicious
in a way that soothes me down to my heart
(reminds me of avocado pizza in Mexico City, covered with
thinly sliced bows, pesto spread on top).
You can put salt into them and scoop them right out of the
skin,
cut them up, throw them in a taco, put them in posole & more!
Avocados are the absolute GOAT of stone fruit,
which is the GOAT of fruit.
That’s why AVOCADOS are the GOAT of all things!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(They should be in most all-you-can-eat-buffets, according
to me.)

From This Publication

UNBOUND: The Power and Possibility of Young Writers’ Emotions began in the fall of 2024, when librarian and literacy ambassador Mychal Threets invited young people across the country to write about their feelings, their way. Together, we shared writing prompts and activities for students in grades K–12 to explore the depth and complexity of their emotions through storytelling. No feeling was too big or too small. No genre was off-limits. Writing has long been a way for young people to make sense of the world, to capture what matters to them, and to imagine new possibilities. This anthology is a window into how young people are feeling right now. Joy, grief, rage, love—all of it belongs here and in this moment. We invite you to read these pages as they were written: with an open heart, brave and unbound.
