Extra, extra, read all about it! In this lesson, students will learn the basics of print journalism and write an editorial for a classroom newspaper.
What Your Students Will Learn

Students will learn the basics of journalistic writing, including discerning newsworthy topics, researching and finding reliable sources,  writing in an informative/journalistic style, and revising their work for publication.

Intro to News and Topic Brainstorm
Students will learn an overview of print journalism, including what makes a story newsworthy and the sections of a newspaper. Students should pick a research topic by the end of this session.

Researching
Students will learn helpful tips for researching effectively and begin investigating their topics by crafting key questions to guide their research.

What’s Your Angle? (Beginning the Writing Process)
Students will learn about developing a major claim–or angle–to anchor their news editorial. Students will pick the angle that best suits the story they want to tell and begin the writing process. They will then outline their main idea and supporting evidence.

Drafting and Elaborating
Now that students have a solid outline in hand, it’s time for them to start adding more details and analysis so that every editorial packs a punch. This session will focus on what details make for strong elaboration.

Revision
The finish line is in sight! When their first drafts are complete, students will revise their editorial draft with the help of a revision checklist.
Introduction :

Every day, journalists around the world report on important and interesting happenings in their communities. Now it’s your students’ turn to join the ranks! For this lesson, students will brainstorm, research, and write a journalistic editorial about a topic they care about in their community. Students will read examples of news stories, learn researching techniques, and revise drafts to write informational stories worthy of a newspaper’s front page.
