Writing POV: Your Favorite Hoodie

by Shani Foster, 826LA
What stories would your hoodie tell? In this fun and versatile writing prompt, students write from the perspective of a favorite piece of clothing.
What You Will Do

This writing prompt asks students to imagine the perspective of a favorite piece of clothing — their hoodie, their shoes, a hat, etc. — and write a story told from this perspective.

STEP ONE

Begin by asking students to jot down a list of their favorite, most-worn pieces of clothing and accessories.

STEP TWO

After about a minute, ask them choose one item on the list they would like to write more about. Invite them to turn and talk to a partner: what did they choose, and what do they love about it?

STEP THREE

Then, ask students to open their notebooks or computers and respond to the following prompt:

  • What if your favorite shoes or hoodie could talk? What would they notice, what would they complain about, and where would they secretly want to take you?

From here, students have a few options. No matter how they decide to start, they should write in first person point of view, from the perspective of the piece of clothing they chose.

  • Write a diary entry from the POV of your piece of clothing, detailing a recent (or imagined) moment from your life, told through their eyes.
  • Write a dialogue between you and your piece of clothing, told from their POV.
  • Write a list of complaints (real or imagined!), from their POV. Choose one complaint and write a story based around it.
  • Write a list of secrets (real or imagined!), told from their POV. Choose one secret and write a story based around it.
  • Or, simply freewrite from the POV of your piece of clothing and see where you imagination takes you!
