Code Your Story

Julius Panoriñgan, 826LA
This project offers an exploration into computer science and coding. Students will learn how a knowledge of coding can make them stronger writers.

Intro to Games

Students will learn about the wide array of rules that exist in games. With the partnership of a group, they’ll create a comprehensive strategy guide to their own game with all of the possible scenarios and conditionals for each. The session will end with a written game of Calvinball as another hands-on exploration of the way rules shape games.
What Your Students Will Learn

Students will explore the rules that make up the backbone of each game in existence, and create their own rules for pre-existing categories of games.

What Your Students Will Produce

Students will demonstrate their knowledge of algorithms and conditionals by writing a strategy guide for their favorite type of game.

Before You Start

You will be showing several strips of Calvin and Hobbes at the end of this session as well, so it would be helpful to have them cued up and ready to be projected.

The first part of “Group Up!” asks students to write down a few of the game categories they enjoy—you can do this within the session if it’s easier, but it will save some time if you can fit in before the lesson—that way you can place your kids into groups before that step! You can also pre-sort your students into pairs or small groups for the Calvinball activity, if preferred.

This lesson introduces programming-related concepts. If you are not already familiar with these idea, read the list below before beginning the lesson:

  • Conditionals: commands for making decisions that are expressed as if statements
