Shifting the Narrative

What is Community Journalism?

During this session, students will learn about community journalism and analyze a news article to identify the role of a reporter.
What Your Students Will Learn

Students will learn about the differences between global, national, and local news stories and identify why local news stories matter.

What Your Students Will Produce

Students will produce a list of current events and news topics that matter to them, which will help guide their writing in later sessions.

What You Will Need

  • Shifting the Narrative—Graphic Organizer
    • 1 copy per student
  • Easel board, butcher paper, or white board
  • An article featuring an interview, pulled from a local news source or printed from an online publication
    • 1 copy per 2 students
  • Notebooks and writing tools for students

 

Before You Start
  • Print enough copies of one article for students to comfortably read in pairs.
  • Be prepared to save the ideas students will brainstorm on Lists B.
