The Letter A’s Failure

My parents raised me for success:
a future that never belonged to them,
yet it’s destined for me.

The path to get there is a line.
It’s sharp and crooked
like the teeth of a villain
and as unforgiving as their heart.
Education is what it’s called.

A single mistake
sends you tumbling into letters
that describe your future in a single stroke.
