We Are Here, Walking Towards the Unknown

Ryan Young
Students write personal and fictional narratives inspired by Frankenstein. Prompts include: misunderstood monsters, fears and horrors, a science experiment gone wrong, and rewriting the story.

Details, Details, Details

Students type up what they’ve written so far, adding more detail, description, and transitions practicing adding editing comments in Google Docs.
What Your Students Will Learn

In this session, students learn how to leave comments in Google Docs, give constructive peer feedback, and strengthen their own writing by replacing weak words with stronger ones.

What You Will Need

Before You Start

Before you begin this session, make sure that you have copies of all the materials needed for each student. In addition, you should decide how you want your students to finalize their drafts: by hand, or on Google Docs or similar. If you choose the latter option, before this session, you should ensure that each student will have access to a computer with Internet during class—and that they’re set up with an email address that can give them access to Google Docs. If you use Google Classroom, you can create an assignment ahead of time to share with your students; the naming convention is listed below.

Your students will also be spending the second half of this session in small groups or partnerships giving feedback—if it would be helpful to create the groups ahead of time, make sure you do so before the session begins.
