Introduction :

We’ve teamed up with College Essay Guy to adapt their blog “How To Write A College Essay” into this lesson. It supports students as they consider the topic, structure, and outline of their college essay, and includes two sessions:

Session One: Designed for all students to try the Montage Structure essay, which connects story events thematically.

Session Two: Designed for only students ready to write about a significant challenge to try the Narrative Structure essay, which connects story events chronologically.

Before you begin, and depending on how far along students are in the college essay process, we encourage you to first spend some time laying essential groundwork with students, including:

  • What is the college essay, and why is it important?
  • Brainstorm essay topics

Ideas for framing this lesson, and brainstorm activities, can be found here. You can also find hundreds of resources and activities designed to support students’ through the college essay writing process at College Essay Guy.
