Super Sentences: Verbs

Nouns, adjectives, adverbs—and in this case—verbs are the building blocks of super sentences. In this Spark, students share action words that bring them joy and incorporate those verbs into a story.
What Your Students Will Learn

 Students will practice identifying and using verbs in their writing.

What Your Students Will Produce

Your students will work together to produce an action-packed story.

What You Will Do

Begin by asking students to share examples of actions that bring them joy (e.g., running, playing, coloring, etc.). Write their answers on the board. Continue collecting verb suggestions until you have a list of at least 10—you can ask for more than 10 examples, too!

Next, ask students to describe, in their own words, what a verb is. Are the action words they just shared verbs?                                          

Next, students will use the list of actions that they shared at the beginning of the activity to write a story as a class. Pass out the handout and ask students to choose 3-5 of the verbs that are written on the board. After students choose their verbs, they will write sentences using those verbs.
