Writing to Process (Elementary)

Writing can be a powerful tool when working through feelings of grief, sadness, or anger. This Spark creates an intentional opportunity for youth to write and speak about what is on their minds.
What Your Students Will Learn

Your students will learn how to use writing as a tool to help express their feelings and reflect on current events.

What Your Students Will Produce

Your students will produce a free-form piece of writing, a drawing, or a plan for impacting social change.

What You Will Do

Before you begin, familiarize yourself with page 3 of “Body Maps: Feeling Emotions in the Body” by Empowering Education. You will also want to write the freewrite question on the board: “Today, I am feeling_________________.”

STEP 1 (10 minutes)

To begin, walk students through performing a Body Scan, to help them bring awareness to themselves and the way they are feeling that day. Empowering Education suggests making it a little silly by using a robot voice to help keep younger students engaged. During the Body Scan, you will ask students a series of questions—they can either answer out loud or silently to themselves. Before you begin, ask students to close their eyes if they feel comfortable, and take 3 slow, deep breaths.
