What You Will Do
Introduction :

Many writers—even some experienced ones—think of writing mostly as a way of expressing themselves, as opposed to communicating with other human beings. Having your students write a fan letter is a great way to encourage them to express their feelings while also considering those of the reader. This lesson is intended to explain both what a fan letter is and what it isn’t. The exercises are meant to be both sincere and tongue-in-cheek, giving the students a creative and fun outlet to figure out the right balance of enthusiasm and the appropriate manner in which to share their feelings with a complete stranger. The attached handout provides a quick course on the nature of fan letters, three class exercises, and an extra-credit assignment.
