Reading Spooky Stories
In this session, students will focus on reading and discussing spooky stories from around the world. They also discuss the definition of a spooky story.
Session 2

Writing Spooky Stories
In this session, students will take what they learned in Session 1 and develop narrative elements for their own spooky stories.
Introduction :

Stories from around the world can teach us so much about different narrative elements, like setting, characters, and conflicts. In this lesson, students are introduced to spooky stories from around the world, focus on the magical elements that tingle a reader’s spine, and include some of those elements in their own spooky story.

Session 1: Reading Spooky Stories
You Will Need
  • Spooky Stories From Around the World — Handout
    • Pages 1-2: for display
    • Pages 3-4: 1 copy per student
  • A World Full of Spooky Stories: 50 Tales to Make Your Spine Tingle by Angela McAllister
    • 1 copy of a story per group of 4-6 students. We suggest any of the following:
      • “The Guest” from Canada
      • “Tam Lin” from Scotland
      • “The Sea Goblins” from New Zealand
      • “The Bogey Beast” from England
      • “The Blind Man and the Demons” from Korea
      • “The Girl Who Turned to Stone” from Chile
      • “The Maiden in the Pagoda” from China
      • “Hansel and Gretel” from Germany
      • “Vasilissa the Beautiful” from Russia
      • “The Ghost and the Moneybox” from Iceland
      • “Esteban and the Ghost” from Spain
