Cheesy Pop Song Poetry

What Your Students Will Learn

This is a fun free-writing task which challenges students to take cheesy pop lyrics and make them into their own original poems. Students will learn where to start writing and experience how writers make discoveries as they compose.

What You Will Do

Tell your students that you will be working on a free-writing task. Where to start? Let’s turn on the radio!

Print out enough cheesy pop lyrics for everyone to have a song to read. Then, ask students to free write for 10  minutes, using their songs as inspiration.

You can give them a couple of options as writing prompts:

  • Take one cliché from a cheesy pop song (maybe read some aloud, dramatically) and rewrite it in a reasonable, exciting, inventive way
  • Take a line directly from the song as your starting point

Either way, start with your pop song, and use free-writing to take it somewhere new!
