Informational, NarrativeSparksLeslie Margolis invites students to explore themselves with this Spark from 826NYC’s quaranTEEN voices program. Leslie is the author of many books, including the Maggie Brooklyn mystery series, and several standalone novels including We Are Party People and Ghosted. Her novel Boys Are Dogs became the Disney movie, Zapped. Leslie has tutored homeless children in New York, and taught fiction-writing to teenagers at 826NYC and Writopia Lab. A frequent visiting author and guest lecturer in schools and libraries, Leslie serves on the board of WAAC, Writers & Artists Across the Country, a non-profit that brings authors to underserved k-12 schools. She lives in Los Angeles.

What makes a person? And what holds more weight—one’s individual spirit or one’s environment? Are people any more than a collection of their experiences? Their choices? Their desires? Is there any such thing as destiny?
Prompt 1:
Write a letter to your younger self. Maybe impart some wisdom you wish you’d had at the time—three years ago, five years ago, eight years ago… you choose. Alternatively, you can create a fictional character, and write a letter as if you were that individual.
Prompt 2:
If you were to make a time capsule to best represent this year, what would go in it? Choose five to ten things. List them and discuss why they are significant to you.
