Slang Candy Hearts

Candy hearts are a Valentine’s Day staple, with their funny—even punny—sayings about love. In this Spark, students will lean into the world of youth slang to write some “sweet” sayings of their own.
What Your Students Will Learn

Your students will learn how to create short messages using common slang from their everyday lives.

What Your Students Will Produce

 Your students will produce a short list of slang-filled sayings to write on a heart cutout.

What You Will Do

Before You Begin: 

  • Though optional, we recommend you bring in a bag of candy hearts to share with your class, then you will have a real-life model to show in step 1. 
  • Gather art supplies for students to use: markers, crayons, colored pencils, etc.

 

STEP 1 

First, ask students to think of a positive or complimentary slang word or phrase that they’re loving right now and  free write for a couple minutes in their writing journals: 

  • What does it mean? 
  • In what situations would you use it? 

Then, ask students if they’re ever heard of candy hearts, conversation hearts, or Sweethearts and either ask a student to share a description of them or pass out the real candy hearts you brought in or show pictures from online.
