The Illustrated Word

In this activity, students illustrate a favorite word and explore what makes words meaningful through illustration, research, and discussion.
What Your Students Will Learn

This activity gives students the opportunity to connect with and think deeply about their favorite words—and bring them to life through illustration.

What You Will Do

As students come in, give each of them a notecard and instruct them to write their favorite word on it. Once everyone has thought of theirs, ask everyone to share their word. Why did they choose these words?  Are they funny? Useful? Intriguing? Powerful? Do they evoke a certain memory? Do students just love the way their word sounds?

What is it that makes a word meaningful? This conversation can be a dynamic way to engage both enthusiastic and reluctant writers.

We’ve often heard and perhaps used the phrase “a picture’s worth a thousand words”. Today, students will flip this idea and illustrate their word. They can do this on their original notecard or on larger paper to display to the group.
