What You Will Do

STEP 1  Students will start by creating identity charts, like this starburst identity chart from Facing History and Ourselves. After they complete their charts, ask students to circle which parts of their identity have always been there (to show that some parts of our identities change and other do not). Then, ask them to list the top five parts of their identity that feel most salient to them — which are the most noticeable or important? Have students raise their hand if they included 1) race 2) gender 3) ethnicity 4) sexuality 5) ability in their saliency rankings. STEP 2  Students will write independently...
