Myth-Making

In this activity, students will examine narrative structure, explore the purpose and practice of myths, and put the two together to create their own original piece.
What Your Students Will Learn

What are stories your family tells? Why? Students will use a Story Map to craft a tale explaining a natural phenomenon. Students will use this three-part arc to develop narratives of real or imagined events through which a situation is transformed into the way it is today.

What You Will Do

We start this activity by putting students in charge of the conversation. Ask them “What is a myth?” Where time allows, use a “Think, Pair, Share” technique to have students discuss their answers in pairs or small groups. Have the group share their responses and list these up on the board. As you discuss the idea of myths together, you’ll want to highlight the following if students haven’t already named it: Myths are a story shared by a group of people Myths explain the group’s shared world (natural phenomenon, traditions, etc) Myths are passed down from generation to generation Different...
