I Spy: Descriptive Writing Practice

I Spy is a classic guessing game. In this Spark, students will play a game of I Spy to practice adding details to their writing.

What You Will Do

Start this prompt by asking students to give you a thumbs up if they’ve played I Spy before—ask students to share when they’ve played the game: in the car, on the way to grandma’s house? On a school bus, traveling to a field trip? Then, share with students that today, they’ll be playing a game of I Spy to practice naming and writing about sensory details. 

Then, display page 1 of the I Spy — Handout. On this page, there is a chart with examples of adjectives that describe each of the five senses. Read through the examples and then work together as a class to complete the chart. 

 

After you’ve completed the chart, model a round of I Spy for students, with a couple modifications to the  traditional game:
