What You Will Do
Session 1

Students will build an understanding of Instagram posts as a hybrid form of public rhetoric that combines text with visual images. They will also learn to distinguish a purely social use of Instagram from those Instagram accounts that are either commercial or that have a purposeful, socially conscious intent. Students will leave this session with an understanding of rhetorical terms such as audience, purpose, and context. Students will also leave with an understanding of the hashtag as a way to connect with larger communities and emojis as digital punctuation.

Students will gain experience in composing the hybrid form of visual and textual rhetoric that defines Instagram by creating mock Instagram posts combining images, text, hashtags, and emojis. Students will also learn what an impactful story might be, and how impact is generated through connecting to audiences with hashtags.

Students will use original photos and text to create an Instagram essay about an issue of concern to them. They will end by reflecting on any changes in their thinking about the use and impact of social media. This is generally an independent project, however if your group is very large, you might want to consider leaving this as a group project.

Note: If students do not have phones, or cannot use their phones during class, instructor phones can be used during the final workshop.
Introduction :

Rhetoric, according to the Merriam Webster Dictionary is defined as“the art of speaking or writing effectively.” Composition teachers often think of rhetoric as writing with an awareness of one’s audience, purpose and the context for the piece of writing. It will be helpful to introduce some or all of these ideas, depending on the age of the group, and then look together as a group for the specific ways Instagram can be viewed as a rhetorical practice. Some students may not have an Instagram account, but often their parents or friends do, so they are familiar with the platform. Most students will be able to talk about what kinds of photos and visuals individuals with private accounts like to share.

Some parents will allow students to open an Instagram account just for this workshop because its goal is to have students use social media for serious public engagement. However, an alternative is to open a private (closed to public view) Instagram account just for your class. You can then provide all students with the password and login information, so they can access the platform.

Session 1:

Students will build an understanding of an Instagram post as a form of public rhetoric that combines text with visual images.
