Super Sentences: Adverbs

Nouns, adjectives, verbs—and in this case—adverbs are the building blocks of super sentences. In this Spark, students will practice identifying and using adverbs in their writing.
What Your Students Will Learn

Students will learn more about the different parts-of-speech, while focusing on adverbs.

What You Will Do

Begin by asking students for help demonstrating what an adverb is. Ask for 3 student volunteers, and then ask the rest of the class for a verb that the three students can act out. Write the verb on the board. Whisper a different adverb to each volunteer; they will act out the verb in a way that describes the adverb you gave them. The volunteers will take turns acting out their adverb, and the rest of the class will try to guess the adverb. After the students have guessed all the adverbs, ask the class, “What is an adverb?” Write...
