Thinking Visually
Students will learn the basics of how to create characters and visually convey character traits. By the end of the session, they will have created templates for the main characters in their graphic novels.

Every Hero Needs a Good Story
This session is all about examining how graphic novels leverage visual storytelling to develop scene and plot. Your students will learn about the hero’s journey and begin to outline their plot before beginning to script out their graphic novel.

Visual Storytelling
In this session, students will be exploring the importance of dialogue and sequential visuals before taking their planning and beginning to create their very own graphic novel.

Exploring Graphic Novels
During this session, students will explore multiple graphic novels in order to analyze the effectiveness of the authors’ choices, from the establishing shot to later captions, illustrations, and dialogue. That exploration will lend itself to a solid period of drafting afterward.

Putting it Together
Through a discussion centered around the effectiveness of covers and an exploration of the power of fiction overall, students will finish their own graphic novels!
Introduction :

Graphic novels are a visually-driven form of narrative that has captivated audiences of children and adults alike for years. They are becoming increasingly present in classrooms due to both their readability and commentary on social issues. In this lesson, students will explore the graphic novel genre by analyzing selections from El Deafo by Cece Bell and American-Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang. Through that analysis, students will focus on plot and character development, scripting dialogue, and visual composition in order to craft their own original short graphic novel.
